PSIM or separate systems? Integrating CCTV, access control and intruder alarm

A picture that repeats itself across dozens of facilities: the operator in the gatehouse faces three monitors and three logins. CCTV on one, access control on the second, intruder alarm on the third. On a quiet day it works. In a real event — when you need to simultaneously see the camera feed, check who opened the door and lock a passage — the operator switches between screens instead of responding. So the question isn't whether to integrate security systems, but how deeply. And the answer to that question decides the difference between cost and value.

Integration isn't a shared cabinet, it's shared logic

The most common misunderstanding: systems physically installed side by side, powered from one cabinet, are considered "integrated." They aren't. Proximity in a technical room doesn't change the fact that each operates on its own, has its own interface and its own logic, and the only link between them is the operator's attention.

Real integration means a shared event scenario: an alarm from a detector doesn't just light an indicator, it automatically calls a specific camera feed to the screen, locks the relevant passage, logs the event and sends a notification — without human involvement. The system stops being a collection of separate sensors and becomes a single nervous system of the facility, in which a stimulus in one place triggers a coordinated response across the whole.

When PSIM pays off, and when it's overkill

A PSIM-class platform — the master software that binds all security systems into one environment — isn't the answer to every need. For a facility with one entrance and a handful of cameras, a well-configured point-to-point integration achieves the same effect for less. PSIM is an investment that pays off only when the facility's scale crosses the threshold beyond which manual event management is no longer possible.

Three variables set that threshold: the number of systems, the number of zones and the number of users. A multi-building campus, a plant with access control at dozens of points, a facility where events from different systems have to be correlated in real time — here PSIM stops being a luxury and becomes the only way one operator can command the whole at all. An honest integrator will tell you which side of that threshold your facility is on — instead of selling a platform where good integration of two systems would do.

Event scenarios are the core, not an add-on

At the heart of any sensible integration are event scenarios — procedures for responding to specific situations, written into the system. Break-in, fire, power failure, an unauthorised-access attempt: for each of these the system should guide the operator step by step — what to display, what to lock, whom to notify, which recording to preserve. It's the transfer of decisions normally made under pressure and with risk of error, in a crisis, into a pre-designed, repeatable procedure.

Without defined scenarios, integration amounts to a shared screen — nicer than three separate ones, but still requiring the operator to know what to do. The value lies not in the systems being connected, but in the connection doing something. This distinction is most often skipped in quotes, because scenarios require understanding the facility and its security procedures, not just wiring the devices together.

Protocols decide whose hostage the facility becomes

Choosing an integration platform is in essence choosing the degree of dependence on a single supplier. Open standards — ONVIF for CCTV, OSDP for access control, open interfaces for alarm panels — allow devices from different manufacturers to be added and individual elements replaced without rebuilding the whole. A closed platform, accepting only one brand's hardware, ties the facility to that supplier for its entire operating life, including its service price list and its pace of development.

This question is asked before choosing a platform, not after. A later change means replacing working devices only because they don't fit the master system — a cost that could have been avoided entirely by choosing an open architecture at the outset.

Integrate what works — don't replace functioning hardware

A warning sign when choosing an integrator is a company that, up front, proposes replacing functioning cameras, readers or panels to fit the facility to its platform. Sometimes such a replacement is justified — hardware can be old or closed enough that it genuinely can't be integrated. But just as often it's simply the easiest route for the contractor, shifting onto the investor a cost that could be avoided.

Good integration starts with an inventory of what the facility already has, and with the question of how much of it can be taken over. A platform able to talk to existing devices through open protocols builds value on what's already installed, instead of scrapping the previous investment and starting from zero.

The best integration without an operator returns to square one

The last, most overlooked element: the people who will use the system. The best-designed integration, with refined scenarios and an open architecture, is worthless if the operator doesn't understand how to use it. In a crisis, people reach for what they know — not for a feature they only know exists from the documentation.

That's why deployment ends not at commissioning the platform, but at training the team, rehearsing the scenarios and writing the procedures in a form the operator will actually reach for. This is the part that turns expensive software into a genuinely working security system.

Facility scale and system count decide whether PSIM is worth it. But the real value of integration — regardless of scale — is always decided by defined event scenarios, open protocols and a trained team. Not by the mere fact that the systems are connected.
